Muskie curlers ice competition

The first of two NorWOSSA qualifier bonspiels was held at the Fort Frances Curling Club on Tuesday, with both the Muskie boys’ and girls’ rinks taking first place.
Kelly Nielson’s rink, including third Amber Sheloff, second Amy Nielson, lead Giselle Bonot, and alternate Katie Bondett, dumped the Rainy River Owls 12-2 and then a mixed team from St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora) 6-1.
Both games ended in six ends.
The boys, skipped by Adam Bolen, nipped the Owls 7-6 and St. Thomas Aquinas 9-7—both in extra ends—before losing to the Beaver Brae Broncos (Kenora) 5-1.
Their 2-1 record gave them a share for top spot with the Broncos among the four-rink field.
Third Jason Pattison, second Joey Wensley, lead Gary Lambert, and alternate Craig Mesdag rounded out the boys’ team, which impressed head coach Tom Fry impressed in their first outing of the season.
“We’ve got a fairly young team. They’re all very keen on developing their game through experience,” he said.
Both teams will host another NorWOSSA qualifier here Jan. 8. before the finals at the end of January.
