Both the Muskie boys’ and girls’ curling teams finished with perfect records at the NorWOSSA playoffs in Kenora this week.
The boys’ rink of Isaac Keffer, Ethan Jordbro, Peter Jensen, Cody Heyens, and Travis Bois went 5-0 with wins over Red Lake (13-1), St. Thomas Aquinas (7-3), Rainy River (7-4), Sioux Lookout (5-4), and host Beaver Brae (6-4) to claim gold and a berth in the NWOSSAA final March 8-10 in Red Lake.
The girls’ team, meanwhile, finished at 3-0.
Tirzah Keffer, Samantha Mueller, Carly Busch, and Andrea Nelson blew out Atikokan 15-2, blanked Beaver Brae 11-0, and then finished up with a tidy 6-4 win over Red Lake.
However, the girls’ team has been deemed ineligible for the NWOSSAA final at this time due to the fact Busch is just in Grade 8.
“There may be a protest regarding it,” boys’ coach Tom Fry noted. “One of the girls on the qualifying team is in Grade 8, but we did have a high school replacement for her for the next level.
“We’re not sure what the outcome is going to be.”
In related news, the local Bantam boys’ rink, consisting of the same five players on the Muskie squad, advanced out of the NOCA inter-regionals last week with a 4-2 record and now will be off to the provincials March 19-22 in Sudbury.
The local Bantam girls narrowly missed advancing after finishing third at the inter-regionals with a 2-2 mark.
