Muskie cruise in opening tourney wins over Owls

Both Muskie boys and girls soccer teams kicked off their annual NorWOSSA tournament this morning season in strong fashion, each disposing of their Rainy River Owl counterparts.
The boys won their match 7-0 while the girls earned a 5-0 win on the St. Francis Sportsfield.
Striker Jeremy Wilson paced the team with two goals. Tanner Kaemingh, Kyle McTavish, Matt Basaraba, Chris Plett, and Tyler Barker added singles in a game that was never close as the Muskies grabbed a 4-0 lead after half-time.
“I was very happy with their first game,” said co-coach Ben Andrusco, whose team controlled the field for most of the game. “The ball movement was excellent but we’re sure to get a bigger challenge tomorrow [against Kenora and Dryden].”
The girls also struck early. Hillary Morgan opened the scoring in the opening minutes and Tara Lloyd, Christin Thomson, and Miranda Miller added one each to take a 4-0 halftime lead.
Rebecca Cornell added another late in the second half to round out the scoring.
“This game was a good way to get everyone some playing time,” said Muskie head coach Struchan Gilson.
Each team will play Red Lake tonight at 6 p.m. and wrap up play tomorrow against Kenora at 1:30 p.m. and Dryden at 6 p.m. Win-loss records this weekend and the May 10-11 weekend in Dryden will go towards seeding for the league finals in Kenora.
