Talk about a great finish to the NorWOSSA season for the Muskie court sports teams.
Three of the four squads were able to claim NorWOSSA gold in their respective finals yesterday at Fort High.
The top-ranked senior boys’ basketball team secured their second straight crown with a hard fought 61-54 win over the second-place Sioux Lookout Warriors in yesterday evening’s championship game.
The Muskies had earned the bye to the final by virtue of their first-place finish in the regular season while the Warriors defeated the third-place Kenora Broncos 57-55 in yesterday morning’s semifinal to earn their shot at gold.
Fort High will now host the best-of-three NWOSSAA championship this Friday and Saturday where it will take on the St. Ignatius Falcons of Thunder Bay.
As for the second-ranked junior squad, they also were able to come away with gold with a thrilling 47-45 win over the top-ranked Dryden Eagles in yesterday afternoon’s final.
The Muskies had defeated the third-place Broncos 46-39 in yesterday mornings’ semifinal to earn their shot at redemption against the Eagles in the final, who took two of the three regular season meetings against the black-and-gold.
In girls’ volleyball action yesterday, meanwhile, the top-ranked Muskie seniors defended their NorWOSSA title from a year ago with a 3-0 sweep of the second-place Eagles in yesterday afternoon’s final.
The set scores were 25-19, 25-18 and 26-24.
The Muskies had earned the bye to the final by virtue of their first-place finish in the regular season while the Eagles had dispatched the third-ranked Warriors in yesterday morning’s semifinal to advance.
Fort High will travel to Thunder Bay for the best-of-three NWOSSAA championship this Friday and Saturday, where they will take on the Westgate Tigers for a potential return trip to OFSAA.
It was the third-place junior squad who was unfortunately the only Muskie team to not secure a title yesterday, falling to the second-place Warriors in yesterday morning’s semifinal to fail to advance.
The top-ranked Eagles claimed NorWOSSA gold that afternoon with a 3-1 win (25-22, 25-19, 9-25 and 25-20) over the Warriors in the championship game.
