The Muskie boys’ and girls’ hockey teams began their respective NorWOSSA seasons over the weekend.
The boys opened defence of their league title with a narrow 4-3 win over the host Dryden Eagles on Saturday thanks to goals by Jeff Davis, Tyler Mosbeck, Nick Jourdain, and Chris Bobczynski.
With a 1-0 league record to their name, along with a pre-season tournament title in Dryden two weekends ago, the black-and-gold next travel to Kenora tomorrow night to take on the Broncos.
Then they’ll head to Morden, Man. for a weekend tournament.
The NorWOSSA home-opener for the Muskie boys is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 22 versus Kenora.
Meanwhile, the Muskie girls split their NorWOSSA opening weekend slate at the Ice For Kids Arena here—falling 6-4 to Dryden on Saturday before beating the Red Lake Rams 6-2 on Sunday.
The black-and-gold trailed the Eagles 4-1 at one point during the second period but roared back to tie the game up at 4-4 in the third before giving up a pair of late goals.
Shae-Lynn Smith and Ericka Tymkin both scored twice for the Muskies.
Then on Sunday, the Muskie girls found themselves tied 2-2 with the Rams going into the third period.
But the hosts took advantage of both a five-on-three and a four-minute power play with a three-goal outburst to put the game out of reach.
The Muskies’ offensive attack was well spread out, with Hailey Clendenning, Katie Sinclair, Alyssa Penner, Shelby Tymkin, Shilo Beck, and Amy Penner all scoring.
Prior to kicking off their league schedule, the Muskies were in Thief River Falls, Mn. for an exhibition contest with the Prowlers but came away with a 6-0 loss.
The Muskie girls also will be back in action tomorrow night when they square off against the Broncos in Kenora.
