The Muskie boys’ hockey team headed to Red Lake over the weekend and came home with two big wins to improve their NorWOSSA record to 3-1.
The black-and-gold opened the two-game series with an 11-1 romp on Friday night backstopped by Jamison Shortreed in goal.
Fellow Grade 10 goalie Devin Stromness started Saturday’s game, which the Muskies took by a 6-2 score.
Mike Jourdain had a hat trick in Saturday’s game after scoring once in the opener. Defenceman Cody McCool also found the net four times over the weekend to pace the Muskies’ attack after missing the previous weekend’s tournament in Morden, Man. due to illness.
“We went hard for both games, and put it to them,” Muskie head coach Shawn Jourdain said. “We did well, the kids played strong games, and had a lot of fun doing it.
They have really been coming along,” he added.
The Muskies played their home-opener last night against the Dryden Eagles (the outcome wasn’t available prior to press time).
“It will be nice to finally get a home game and try to get pay back on Dryden,” Jourdain said after his team opened NorWOSSA action with four-straight road games, including a season-opening 5-2 loss to the Eagles.
“They [the Eagles] are a good squad and come out hard, and we’ll need to be ready to play a full game,” he warned.
The Muskies then will head to Spring Lake, Mn. for an abbreviated, four-team tournament this Friday and Saturday.
The squad opens the tournament against host Spring Lake on Friday, and will advance to the final Saturday night with a win against the winner of the Irondale/Cambridge match-up.
“Minnesota high school hockey is really good, so we expect the competition to be tough,” Jourdain noted.
