The dream of an undefeated NorWOSSA season went by the boards here Friday night for the Muskie boys’ hockey team. Then on Saturday, they showed their displeasure in no uncertain terms.
The Red Lake Rams, who had beaten the black-and-gold at a pre-season tournament in Dryden, turned the trick again Friday night at the Ice for Kids Arena with a 2- 1 victory.
But the following afternoon, it was all about revenge for the home side as the Muskies took control from the outset in a 7-4 victory at the ’52 Canadians Arena to improve their league record to 9-1-1.
A gritty Rams defence that kept deflecting Muskie shots wide of the net, and made life difficult for any Fort High forward standing in front, was the hallmark of Red Lake’s win Friday night.
Dave Weese and NorWOSSA leading scorer Breven Gawley scored 1:15 apart late in the second against Muskie goalie Matt Gamsby to provide the Rams with all the offence they needed.
Kurtis Wepruk’s third-period power-play goal with 3:27 to play wasn’t enough for the Muskies on this night.
But on Saturday, Mitch Green put the home crowd in a good mood right away with his goal at 2:24 of the first, and Fort High rolled from there on the back of some potent offence and strong goaltending by Jason Green.
Steven Sus added a pair while Brock Benjamin, Tyler Miller, Kyle McTavish, and Terry Kellar had the others for the Muskies.
Gawley netted a pair for Red Lake, with Cody Jeffries and Tyler Rolfe adding the others.
The Muskies are on the road in Baudette tonight for an exhibition game against the Lake of the Woods Bears, then head to Kenora to battle the Broncos on Tuesday night for their final Nor- WOSSA game before the Christmas break Scoreboard pinball Meanwhile, with far too many memories of being on the wrong side of a blowout on their résumé, the Muskie girls’ hockey team finally got to be the windshield instead of the bug.
Kristin Roehrig had a hat trick, and Stephanie Strachan, Hannah Firth, and Francine McCabe each added a pair, as the Muskies hammered Red Lake 13-3 in exhibition action Friday night at the ’52 Canadians Arena.
The ‘AA’ Muskies had their way with the ‘A’ Rams, scoring seven times in the first period against a Red Lake side that was greatly overmatched.
Sarah O’Sullivan, Katie McTavish, Carly Holt, and Courtney Caldwell pitched in with singles for Fort High, with Megan Bob earning up the win in goal.
Candice Lajeunesse scored all three of the Rams’ goals in the loss.
Then Saturday afternoon, the Muskies used a hat trick from Cassandra Cochrane and two more from Caldwell to pound the Rams 9-1 at the Ice for Kids Arena.
Holt, Roehrig, Strachan, and Firth added singles for Fort High while Angie Maoussi had the lone reply for Red Lake against Muskie goalie Kim Pacarenuk.
The Muskies—who are 3-2 in exhibition play but 0-4 in Nor- WOSSA action—also are scheduled to play the Broncos there tomorrow night.
