Muskie boys’ rink snags all-Ontario berth

A Fort High curling rink is headed to the all-Ontarios for a second-straight year—only this time it will be the guys carrying the Muskie colours.
The Muskie boys’ foursome, featuring skip Isaac Keffer, third Cody Heyens, second Ian Grant, and lead Jordan Sokoliuk, nabbed the OFSAA berth with a 8-1 victory over Westgate (Thunder Bay) in the final round-robin game at the NWOSSAA playdowns yesterday afternoon in Terrace Bay.
Keffer, whose older sister, Tirzah, led the Muskie girls’ rink to the all-Ontarios a year ago, led his team to a 5-1 record for top spot in the seven-rink field, with their lone loss coming to Longlac on the opening night of competition on Sunday.
The black-and-gold also upended Sioux Lookout, Geraldton, Superior, and host Terrace Bay en route to NWOSSAA gold.
It was a different story for the NWOSSAA defending champion Muskie girls’ rink, however, who managed just a 2-2 record to finish in third place this time around.
After opening with a loss to Sioux Lookout on Sunday, Keffer and her crew of third Samantha Mueller, second Taylor Hartlin, and lead Carley Busch, thrashed Superior 10-1 on Monday morning but then fell 7-2 to eventual champion Nipigon-Red Rock in the afternoon draw.
The Muskies later wrapped up round-robin play with a 8-3 win over Chateau Jeunesse (Longlac) that night.
The OFSAA playdowns will run March 23-26 at the Fort William and Port Arthur curling clubs in Thunder Bay.
