Muskie boys pluck Eagles

It was a late push, but it was enough to push the Eagles over the cliff.
Brock Benjamin set up Brian White for the game-winner, then added an insurance marker all within the last five minutes of the third period, as the Muskie boys’ hockey team (11-1-1) pulled out a 6-4 win over the visiting Dryden Eagles in NorWOSSA action last night.
The teams were tied 4-4 when White finished off a three-way set-up from Benjamin and Justin Larson at 15:15 of the third. Then Benjamin followed with an unassisted tally at 17:02.
The Muskies had led 3-2 after the first on goals from David Pierce, Larson, and Steven Sus while Dryden responded with tallies by Mike Makar and Dino Williams.
Sus made it 4-2 in the second, but Andrew Skene trimmed the lead to one late in the period.
Brian Montgomery of the Eagles connected at 1:42 of the third to even the contest before White and Benjamin filled the role of heroes for the evening.
In Muskie girls’ hockey action, a hometown squad that’s been understaffed all season iced only 12 skaters last night and consequently suffered an 11-1 loss to the visiting Eagles at the ’52 Canadians Arena.
With Krystine Marchuk recently having been cut from the team and Sarah O’Sullivan sidelined by tooth surgery, the black-and-gold (0-6) were no match for a talented Eagles’ side that scored three times in 1:37 late in the second to ice the victory.
Kasey Haw tallied four goals to pace Dryden while Joanna Lappage and Megan Pimette each added a pair. Jessica Hymens, Brittany Bembeneck, and Carly Brown added singles.
Carly Holt broke up Ashley Scheibler’s shutout bid at 3:23 of the third for the lone Muskie goal.
The girls next host the Kenora Broncos in NorWOSSA action Friday at 7 p.m. at the ’52 Canadians Arena.
The boys next play at home this Tuesday (Jan. 13) at 7:30 p.m. in the Ice for Kids Arena when they take on the Lake of the Woods Bears (Baudette) in exhibition action.
