With hospitality like that, it’s no wonder the Muskie boys’ hockey team makes certain to schedule an annual trip to see one of its alumni.
The Muskies played their last game before exam break with a sense of purpose, dominating the host Lafayette Eagles 6-0 in an exhibition game Saturday in Red Lake Falls, Mn.
The Eagles are coached by former Muskie Brad (O.J.) Kennett, but the current version of the black-and-gold proved to be less than kind visitors in bumping their overall season record to 23-5.
“It was a really good game, better than the 6-0 score showed,” said Muskie assistant coach Brad Gushulak.
“We didn’t play well in the first and in the second, we got in a lot of penalty trouble,” he noted.
“But we took it to them in the third.”
Colton Spicer, Jeff Gustafson, Davis Ross, Chris Bobczynski, Brendan Cawston, and Robbie Rea provided the offence for Fort Frances while Devin Stromness earned the shutout between the pipes.
The Muskies don’t play again until next Monday (Jan. 30) at 3:45 p.m. when the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora) visit the Emo-La Vallee Community Centre for an exhibition showdown.
Fort High then returns to NorWOSSA action next Tuesday (Feb. 1) with a road trip to Dryden, where the Muskies will look to strengthen their hold on first place.
With a mark of 6-1 in league play, the black-and-gold are three points up on the Kenora Broncos (4-2-0-1) and four ahead of the third-place Eagles (4-4).
