Muskie boys claim consolation title

Muskie boys’ soccer coach Shane Beckett maintained his crew was better last night than it was on Friday.
The black-and-gold squeezed in a quartet of games at the annual St. John’s-Ravenscourt tournament in Winnipeg over the weekend, dropping their first two before rebounding with a pair of victories.
The offence was silent early as Fort High opened with a 3-0 loss to J.H. Bruns on Friday night, then fell 2-0 to Miles Macdonnell on Saturday morning.
However, the Muskies busted out Saturday afternoon, beating Glenlawn 4-1 on the strength of a Colton Spicer hat trick and a goal the Lions scored on themselves.
Then in the consolation final, the black-and-gold blanked the host Eagles 5-0, thanks to a pair of goals by Brandon Sinclair and singles from Spicer, Anniss Seid, and David Chambers.
Rookie keeper Scott Parsons was in goal for Friday night’s game while veteran Matt DePiero took the reins in the remaining three matches.
Both the Muskie boys’ and girls’ soccer teams kick off NorWOSSA play with games against Kenora and Dryden here Wednesday.
The girls’ squad also will attend the same SJR tournament in Winnipeg this coming weekend.
