For the first time, talk of golden moments in Muskie sports now can be about something other than hockey.
Grade 9 student Sekina Scheibler powered his way to a gold medal in the Midget boys’ discus event at the OFSAA track-and-field championships Saturday in Toronto.
According to all research available as of press time, Scheibler is the first individual athlete in Fort High history to win an OFSAA championship.
He joins the Muskie boys’ hockey teams of 1986, 1989, and 2001.
The rookie had a winning throw of 44.25m in his third attempt out of six to beat Matthew Martin of the Bishop Allen Cardinals (Etobicoke), whose fourth throw travelled 43.37m.
Allen then gift-wrapped the victory for Scheibler when he fouled on his last two opportunities.
Scheibler had qualified for three events in the Midget boys’ division at OFSAA, all of which took place Saturday, but only participated in two.
He wound up in 16th in the long jump, with his best leap coming on first try out of three with a mark of 5.39m.
Shamir Khan of the Glenview Park Panthers (Cambridge) won the event (6.35m).
Scheibler also was on the start list for the shot put but ended up sitting out the event for undisclosed reasons.
Muskie team captain Jenny Hammond, making her second-straight appearance at OFSAA, matched her result of last year in the senior girls’ 800m on Saturday by coming in 23rd (2:39.18).
