The Fort Frances Mud Dogs needed to clear their heads after some early-game difficulties.
So they decided to take a walk—plenty of them.
The first-place Mud Dogs (8-0) drew 11 walks, including three-straight with the bases loaded in the third, en route to a 20-9 victory over the Emo Renegades in Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League action last night at VanJura.
Missy Nelson and Shelby Tymkin had three RBI each for Fort Frances, which only had five hits in the game but benefitted from nine Renegades errors.
Janelle Andy had four hits to lead Emo (3-5), which lost its fourth-straight outing.
In other games last night, the Fort Frances Her-icanes (7-1) kept pace with a 17-0 whitewash of the host Sabaskong Tebinaak (1-5).
Tracy Morningstar hurled a two-hit shutout for the ’Canes while Janet Bob took the loss.
Meanwhile, the Fort Frances Angels (2-6) mounted a thrilling rally from seven runs down to tie things up—keyed by Reece McQuaker’s bases-loaded triple in her RRDWFL debut.
But the Angels gave four runs right back to fall 15-11 to the host Big Grassy Lynx (4-3).
The Couchiching Lady Raiders (6-1) used pitching and defence en route to a 12-6 victory over the host Dawson Diggers (2-6).
Pitcher Sid Jones was stellar again for Couchiching, which won its sixth-straight after losing its season-opener.
Shannon Stone hit her league-best fifth homer of the season in a losing cause.
The Red Gut Babes (5-2) also are riding high—extending their winning streak to four with a 13-3 pounding of the host Big Island Wildcats (4-4).
And the defending champion Northwest Bay Beavers (3-4) kept their resurrection on course—winning their third-straight with a 21-6 hammering of the host Manitou T-Birdies (0-7).
Darcy Smith earned the win while Summer Leonard was tagged with the loss despite tying Stone by belting her fifth homer.
League action resumes Monday at 7 p.m. with six games as the league enters the final week of first-round action.
The teams the will be separated into geographic divisions for the second half.
Meanwhile, the Rainy River District Fastball League has six games on the schedule tonight (weather permitting), including the Sight & Sound Wolves hosting the Big Grassy Lightning at VanJura.
