Whether she was standing on the mound or at the plate, Rachelle Yeo gave the Fort Frances Angels a devil of a time all game.
Yeo went 3-for-3 with five RBI while tossing six solid innings to spearhead a 16-7 victory for the Fort Frances Mud Dogs in Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League action yesterday at the St. Francis Sports Field.
Yeo doubled home Christine Jean to cap a three-run first to put the Mud Dogs up 3-2.
She later cracked a two-run single that plated Kaily Greengrass and Jean for a 6-4 lead.
Then in the fifth, Yeo lined a single off losing pitcher Sara Jackson to again score Greengrass and Jean to put the Mud Dogs (3-1) ahead 8-6.
The rest of the inning was a messy affair for the Angels (2-2), including two infield errors that yielded three runs.
Yeo gave up six runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out nine before Jodie Hood closed it out in the seventh in her pitching debut.
Jackson led the Angels’ offensive attack by getting on base all four times and scoring three runs.
In other games yesterday, the Big Grassy Lynx (3-1-1) took over sole possession of second place with a 22-14 win over the Couchiching Lady Raiders (2-2-1).
Candace Handorgan became the first pitcher to reach three wins in outpitching Stephanie Racine.
The Dawson Tigers (1-3) notched their first win of the season with a 30-10 romp over the Manitou T-Birdies (2-3).
Alicia Anderson got the win over Bev Cochrane.
The Red Gut Babes (2-3) doubled the Northwest Bay Beavers (0-3-2) by a 6-3 count.
Alyssa Windego was credited with the win while Darcy Smith took the loss.
Finally, the Sabaskong Tebinaak (1-2) pulled out a controversial 14-13 win over the Emo Renegades (2-2).
Sabaskong was allowed to start the game with just eight players, which may have been against league rules, although no clarification was available at press time.
Jarrah Tom picked up the victory over Mykenzie Borger.
The first-place Fort Frances Her-icanes (4-0) had the bye last night.
League action resumes at 7 p.m.
In the Rainy River District Fastball League action Tuesday night, the defending champion Sight & Sound Wolves improved to 2-0 with a 7-4 victory over Windey’s Warriors.
Sean Councillor homered for the Warriors (1-2), but took the loss against former Stratton Eagles’ hurler Murray Armstrong.
The Fort Frances Braves (2-0) routed the winless Northwest Bay Juniors 34-0 as Cole Tymkin tossed the complete-game shutout over Dan Andy.
Meanwhile, the Barwick Blue Knights’ regular-season winning streak ended after the Dawson Tigers pushed across three runs in the second extra frame to earn a 5-2 victory.
Jeff Morrison got the win for Dawson (2-0) over JJ Landry and the Blue Knights (1-1).
Wade Johnson pitched the Couchiching Raiders (1-1) to a 14-6 win over former Raider Mike Jourdain and the Manitou Thunderbirds (1-1).
Stratton (2-0) outslugged the Rainy Royals (0-2) by a 24-15 count.
Myron Armstrong homered for the Eagles, with Logan Jackson getting the win over Chris Stone.
In a bragging rights’ clash, the Sabaskong Lakers (1-0) dumped the winless Sabaskong Cubs 17-2.
Matt Comegan, an all-star with Dawson last season, earned the win while Kevin Copenace was saddled with the loss.
Finally, the Northwest Bay Chieftains (1-1) blanked the expansion Sabaskong Goldeneyes (0-2) by an 18-0 margin.
Braden Smith earned the shutout over Darryl Beacham.
