Morgan tops qualifying meet

Hillary Morgan received the top mark at the women’s provincial level in the qualifier last weekend at the Confederation College “Bubble” with an overall score of 53.1 for the total of her optional and compulsory routines.
She received the 2000 gold medal award competing against seven other prov. 2 athletes from the Northwest region.
Kaela Hahkala placed third in the same category, receiving the bronze medal with a total score of 51.8. She also qualified for the provincials.
Laura Chabot placed first in the Prov. 1 category for the gold medal with a total score of 44.1.
In the men’s Prov. 2 category, Travis Hahkala placed first for the gold medal with a total score of 51.8. Adam Cumming placed second for the silver in the same category with a total score of 49.3.
Both boys qualified for the provincial championships.
Head coach Mike Lang, will be taking the five top athletes (Morgan, Hahkala, Chabot, Hahkala, Cumming) to the championships to be held in Etobicoke on April 8-9.
Kaela Hahkala and Morgan have competed at the provincials in the past but this will be a first experience for Laura, Adam, and Travis.
“This is my first year taking competitors to trampoline championships, too,” Lang remarked. “I’m really looking forward to it.
“I’ve taken athletes to the Ontario Winter Games and to the Artistic Gymnastics Provincials, and it has always been a real learning experience for the competitors and myself.
“I find it very rewarding.”
Superior Trampoline Club of Thunder Bay hosted the trampoline qualifier on the weekend. They brought in national judge, Joel Perron who was able to re-certify Tina Herdman and Kristine Welsh before the meet to complete a full panel of provincial judges.
Susie Grynol acted as DD judge, which requires a great deal of experience and fast thinking.
Grynol relies on her national competitive background to recognize and put a value to the more difficult moves.
Execution judges were Mike O’Brien (Sioux Lookout), Betty Grynol (Devlin), Tina Herdman and Kristine Welsh (Thunder Bay).
The Fort Frances Trampoline Club will be holding its general meeting at the Gymnastics Academy next Monday (March 6) at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is open to all members and anyone interested in promoting the sport.
The trampoline club was excited to hear the news that they sold two of the winning tickets for the Gymnastics Ontario Raffle. Stan Skowronski of Winnipeg won the second prize (DVD home sound system) but the ticket was sold in Fort Frances.
Arlan Hahkala sold the third-prize winning ticket to his friend, Paul Howarth, of Dryden (complete computer system).
The money raised by this raffle will go towards sending the coach with the athletes to the provincials in Etobicoke.
