A pair of Fort Frances Jr. Sabres were among the SIJHL’s regular-season award recipients announced over the weekend.
Ryan Faragher followed up his player-of-month honours for February by being named winner of the Daniel Beardy Memorial Award as the league’s best goalie.
Faragher led the SIJHL with a stingy .921 save percentage while finishing second to the Fort William North Stars’ Jay Pelletier in goals against average at 2.44 (although Faragher started 15 more games).
He also led all goalies in wins with 24 (24-14-0-1) and had a league-best five shutouts.
Meanwhile, Sabres’ forward Mitch Cain was a co-recipient for best defensive forward with the North Stars’ Cale Brown.
Cain, the league’s rookie-of-the-year last season, finished his sophomore campaign with 26 goals and 36 assists, including two shorthanded markers.
Todd Howarth (North Stars) earned coach-of-the-year honours while league-leading scorer Trevor Gamache (North Stars) nabbed the MVP award.
Pelletier was named rookie-of-the-year while his Fort William teammate, Joel Langevin, was named the league’s most gentlemanly player.
Veteran defenceman Brad Pawlowski (Thunder Bay Bearcats) hauled in the league’s top defenceman honours while Kevin Burton (Dryden Ice Dogs) was named the most improved player.
The Gary Cook Memorial Award for executive-of-the-year went to Doug Lawrance of the expansion Sioux Lookout Flyers.
