Mixed night for Muskies

Despite a rash of injuries, and a busy schedule that saw the team play its fourth game in five nights, the Muskie boys’ hockey team edged the Dryden Eagles 3-2 in NorWOSSA action at the Ice for Kids Arena last night.
The Muskies (13-0-1) opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the game when captain Ryan Witherspoon converted a Brian Glavish pass for the early 1-0 lead.
Taylor Jorgenson then scored his 10th goal in NorWOSSA play in the waning moments of the first period—tying him for second in the goal-scoring race with teammate George Halverson and Red Lake’s Devin O’Donnell.
Red Lake’s Peter Martone currently leads the league with 14 goals.
The black-and-gold extended their lead early in the second period while on the power play.
Kevin Bobczynski, who recently re-enrolled at Fort High after a brief stint playing in Thunder Bay, converted a Kyle Turgeon pass to put the Muskies up 3-0.
The Eagles (7-6-0-1) got goals from David Spicer and Brenden Church to pull to within a goal, but Muskie goalie David Moen shut the door the rest of the way to preserve the one-goal victory.
Meanwhile, the Muskie girls’ hockey team squandered a one-goal lead late in the third period en route to a 5-4 loss to the host Kenora Broncos last night.
Trailing 3-1 heading into the third period, the Muskies (3-4-1) got a pair of goals from Lauren Krukoski (both assisted by team captain Carly Holt), in addition to a marker from Miranda Kellar (Taylor Meyers), to pull ahead.
But the Broncos (3-5) scored twice in the waning moments of the game to steal the victory.
Holt scored the Muskies’ first goal of the game, assisted by Lauren Pierce and Krukoski.
Both teams resume NorWOSSA play here next Tuesday (Feb. 6) against the Kenora Broncos.
