The Emo Misfits scored with two minutes left in overtime to pull out a thrilling 4-3 win over the Fort Frances Chiefs in the final of the Chiefs’ fourth-annual tournament that was held March 1-3 at “The Duke” (Couchiching Arena).
The Misfits opened the scoring with 51 seconds to go in the second period before striking again in the third to go ahead by two.
Shelby Tymkin got the Chiefs on the board when she tallied with 7:26 to go but the Misfits responded on the next shift to make it 3-1.
Katie Sinclair then bulged the twine with 2:20 to go before Tymkin tallied again just 20 seconds later to knot the score and force overtime.
With time winding down, the Misfits regrouped and buried the winner.
Both squads now have won the tourney twice each, making for a pretty fierce rivalry.
The Chiefs had opened tourney play on the Friday with a 7-1 rout of the Thunder Bay Warriors, who had former Muskie Annalise (CC) Hayes playing for them.
Tymkin netted a hat trick in that one while Emily Martin, Shae Smith, Hannah Ledrew, and Amber Jourdain also scored.
The squad then lost 5-2 to the Misfits on the Saturday afternoon but rebounded with a 5-0 shutout of the Red Lake Lotzza Hotzza that evening.
The Chiefs then blanked the Sioux Lookout Snipers on the Sunday morning to book their ticket to the final that afternoon.
Emo, meanwhile, had opened play on the Friday evening with a 3-1 win over the Snipers.
The Misfits then blanked the Lotzza Hotzza 5-0 on the Saturday morning before beating the Chiefs that afternoon.
The squad then suffered a 5-3 loss to the Warriors that evening, in which Hayes netted a hat trick for Thunder Bay.
But Emo rebounded with a big win in the championship game Sunday afternoon to salt away any disappointment.
