Miners overtake top spot with win over Lakers

Red Lake Miners’ captain Shaye Sommerfeld scored twice to lead his side to a 6-2 win over the Fort Frances Lakers in SIJHL action on Tuesday night at the Cochenour Arena.
With the win, the Miners (28-12-3-2) moved into first place overall in the SIJHL standings, two points clear of the idle Thunder Bay North Stars (28-13-3), who do however hold a game in hand.
After surrendering the night’s opening goal, Red Lake stormed back with four straight markers to take a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes.
Kyle Uzelman got the Lakers (15-23-3-1) off to a good start just 5:32 into the first period with his 15th goal of the season.
However, the Miners roared back by striking four times in a four-minute span to turn things around.
After Sommerfeld evened it midway through the frame, Bryce Krauter connected a couple of shifts later to give the hosts their first lead of the night.
Not done there, William Walsh connected at 13:22 while Sommerfeld scored again moments after that as the Miners took a 4-1 cushion into the intermission.
Red Lake added to its lead with the lone marker of the middle stanza when Rajvir Sangha converted on a man advantage opportunity at 16:51.
Then in the third, the Miners salted the game away with Krauer collecting his second of the night before Peyton Hughes added one late for the Lakers to round out the scoring.
Walsh, Spencer Milne and Ethan Stuckless each chipped in with two assists apiece to aid the Miners’ offensive cause.
Zach Willms made 34 saves to record his league-leading 23rd win of the year, which is just two off the personal-best of 25 he picked up last season with the Miners.
Lakers’ goalie Dean Buchholz, meanwhile, faced 35 attempts in defeat.
The two teams will finish off the home-and-home series Friday in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Ice For Kids Arena here.
The last-place Lakers then will host the fifth-place expansion Wisconsin Lumberjacks in Family Day matinee game on Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Fans who wear a jersey to Monday’s game will be entered into a draws for Lakers’ swag.
