Mighty Mustangs rumble at meets

It was a pretty impressive weekend on the mat for members of the Mighty Mustang youth wrestling program in International Falls.
The squad competed in a pair of tournaments over the weekend, which was highlighted by a multitude of top-three finishes.
Teagan Green of the Falls nabbed first place in the 60- to 65-pound division at a tourney in Hibbing on Friday.
Fort native Vai Lockman earned second place in the 55- to 60-pound division while Layla Reller of the Falls did the same in the 65- to 70-pound one.
Savannah Demers of the Falls also grabbed third in the 65- to 70-pound division.
Then on Saturday, the club was split up, with some members competing in Nashwauk, Mn. while others were in Aitkin.
Lockman and Green both took home top honours in Nashwauk.
Rodger Dueck of the Falls nabbed second place in the 70- to 75-pound division while Jack Wolfe did the same in the 50- to 55-pound division.
Reller, Pablo Christiansen, Brooks Bilben, and Diego Christiansen all captured third-place finishes.
George Boe, meanwhile, placed first in the 50- to 55-pound division in Aitkin while Demers was third there.
“Our wrestlers wrestled good,” noted Mighty Mustangs’ assistant coach Jeremy Mann.
“Stance and attacking are definitely getting better [but] we still gotta work on countering headlocks,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Hudson Mann, who was born in Fort Frances but now lives in the Falls, competed at the Corn Cob Nationals in Iowa over the weekend, where he placed fifth.
“Hudson wrestled pretty good at the Corn Cob Nationals,” remarked Jeremy Mann, who also is his father.
“We definitely need him to get to his attacking quickly his first match.
“He had great ankle picks and re-shots,” he added.
“He’s at a tough age and level, and this level of wrestling doesn’t allow for many mistakes.”
Aiden Juen of Littlefork, Mn. also was in action at an NYWA (Northland Youth Wrestling Association) tournament in Deer River, Mn. and placed fourth.
Up next, the Mighty Mustangs will be in action again this Saturday in Virginia, Mn.
“As for Easter weekend, not much [is going on],” noted Mann.
“If I’m off, I will probably take Hudson to ‘Battle Lake’ by the North Dakota border,” he remarked.
“We’re looking at getting some more matches before we possibly go to Adidas Nationals in Independence, Mo. on April 5-7,” Mann added.
