Taylor Meyers is starting to stand out in OUA soccer play this season—and not just for her height.
Meyers is tending goal for the University of Waterloo Warriors’ soccer team and so far has made a good impression on her coach, Peter Mackie.
“Taylor has done very well,” Mackie lauded. “She has been our starting goalkeeper from Day 1.
“We lost a five-year starter last year [Catherine Vandenburg], so goalkeeping was a big concern leading into this season,” Mackie added.
He said Meyers has great size, is aggressive, and has excellent hands.
“She is very athletic but raw, and will continue to improve with good goalkeeping training,” Mackie continued. “The coaching staff has seen a steady improvement since she arrived in August.
“We are struggling to score goals but Taylor has been outstanding.”
The rookie-laden Warriors have had their share of growing pains through eight games this season, currently sporting a 1-5-2 record.
But things have started to turn in their favour of late, including a 1-0 shutout over Western on Sunday.
“Taylor had her second shutout [Sunday], shocking the University of Western at home,” Mackie said.
“We still have a shot at the playoffs after [Sunday’s] big win.”
Meyers also earned the shutout in a 0-0 draw against Guelph on Sept. 27, with the team having gone 1-0-2 in their last three outings after going winless through their first five games.
The Warriors will face a stiff test tomorrow and Friday with a home-and-home series with top-ranked Wilfrid Laurier University (6-1-1).
Laurier leads the OUA West Division while the Warriors currently sit in seventh out of eight teams—three points behind sixth-place McMaster.
After the two games against Laurier, the Warriors will have four remaining to try to sneak into a top-six position and the first-round playoff berth that goes with it.
