‘Memorial’ seeks more players

Registration is a little low for the annual Memorial golf tournament this Sunday at Kitchen Creek but organizers are hoping it will pick up before Saturday’s entry deadline.
As of yesterday, only 30 golfers had registered for the 18-hole event, which can house a maximum of 120.
“We usually draw pretty good, more of a late-arriving crowd,” said club pro Steve Wood, who welcomed more than 50 golfers at last year’s tournament.
Cost to enter of $45, which is due by 5 p.m. on Saturday, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The fee includes a meal, plus a chance to win prizes in three flights.
Three-time defending champ Greg Ward will be back. He carded a one-over par 73 last year to win the Harry Barefoot Memorial (championship flight).
Dan Livingston won the Bob Biggs Memorial (first flight), Clint Pruys earned the Harvey Shute Memorial (second flight), while Sheldon Kelly took home the Tom Onichuk Memorial (third flight).
Formerly known as the “early bird” to kick off the tournament season, the Memorial now names its awards after Kitchen Creek’s key builders.
Recent warm weather should leave the course in stellar shape for this Sunday, which will be followed up by the annual law enforcement tournament the following day.
