Nine members of the local Northwest Taekwondo team had quite the medal haul at the 33rd-annual Can-Am Games in Winnipeg over the weekend.
Corey Fehr (black belt) led the charge with a gold medal in the men’s full-contact heavyweight fighting division while Lindsay Bourre of Rainy River nabbed a pair of bronze in both the fighting and form disciplines.
Larry George (yellow belt) won a silver medal in his fighting division.
Winning fighting bronze medals were Matt Swiegard (blue belt), Alex Woknitz (blue belt), James McInerney (black stripe), and Carson George (yellow belt).
Yvonne McPherson (yellow belt) won bronze in both disciplines while Jake Vandenbrand (blue belt) of Stratton also competed.
The team had a very successful showing against a deep field featuring competitors from Ontario, Manitoba, and Minnesota.
Fehr’s title win came in the very last fight of the day and was a high achievement for the club.
Meanwhile, Bourre’s lone blemish in her first black belt tournament came against the eventual division winner.
Master instructor Ken Anderson was very pleased with the effort put forth by all his competitors.
The club meets Mondays and Wednesdays in the small gym at Fort High, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at Our Lady of the Way School in Stratton.
Northwest Taekwondo, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in Rainy River District next fall, has trained almost 900 students and produced 40 black belts.
