It’s a quick turn around for Trevor Bonot coming off an exceptional performance at his first Brier, he and his sister Jackie McCormick will head to New Brunswick this weekend for the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championships.

Speaking Monday from back home in Thunder Bay Bonot was back in the office at his day job but thoughts were back at the rink looking towards the mixed doubles.

The siblings will wing their way east on Saturday and they play their first game on Sunday against Team Cotter.

McCormick was away from the ice while watching her brother at the Brier but says it was good to rest her legs a bit.

“I’m feeling prepared, I got myself a little bit of rest during the Brier,” she said. “So at first I was worried about being idle for over a week while I was watching but I think the rest for my legs is probably good. So I’m back on the ice, feeling good practicing just about every day this week so I’m preparing as well as I can solo, so I have to do everything by myself.”

For Bonot he’s hoping to strike while the iron is hot.

“It’s a short turnaround which is nice, because when you’re playing well, you might as well go somewhere else and keep playing well,” Bonot said.

Given their limited experience as a pair playing doubles they aren’t ranked very high but McCormick says she doesn’t think they’ll be underestimated after Bonot’s performance at the Brier last week.

“We’re ranked 31 out of 32 teams so we’re kind of flying under the radar hopefully,” McCormick said. “Although that ranking was from February 20 so prior to the Brier. So I’m sure we’re not flying too far under the radar now since Trevor’s performance at the Brier. But you know I’m going in feeling fairly good about it.”

The event in Fredericton will be spread over two venues, a The Capital Winter Club curling rink and Aitken University Centre at the University of New Brunswick. McCormick says she’ll be relying on her brother to help with reading the ice.

“We’re going to have a mix of arena ice play and curling club ice play so we’re going to have to be able to go back and forth between the two which I think we will handle fairly well,” McCormick said. “Trevor’s really good at ice reading. So I’m pretty confident in his ability to flip back and forth between the two.”

They’ll also have a small group of fans along for the ride.

“We have a small contingent of fans coming, I think there’s five of them coming,” McCormick said. “Not the same as the Brier but still you know, it’s nice to have a little fan support as we head out there.”
