In Cinderella, the chiming of midnight turned the future princess’ stagecoach into a pumpkin. Quinn McCarthy’s ability to pass other boats on Saturday, though, was no fairy tale.
McCarthy piloted his boat, “Sedna,” to victory in the Pumpkin Cup on Rainy Lake to continue his domination on Saturdays this year, collecting his fifth weekend victory of the 2003 sailing season.
He also took top spot in the Sandpoint Island, Canada Day, and Mermaid Rock events, as well as the Wells Fargo Classic.
The only racers to stop his string of successful Saturdays were Colin Hewitt (“Ariba”) in the Kettle Falls race and Ron Bowman (“In Tune”) at Woody’s Fairly Reliable Regatta.
Bowman exchanged the lead with McCarthy throughout Saturday’s race, but had to settle for second place while Hewitt took third. Eric Rude (“Salty Dog”) finished fourth, followed by Todd Hamilton (“Through”).
But it was all Bowman during the Wednesday night fall series, wrapping up the title recently by winning his fifth race out of the six. It also was his ninth overall on Wednesdays this season.
Bob Algie (“Kemosabe”) was the only boat able to prevent a Bowman sweep of the fall series.
Other fall series participants included Hewitt, Rude, Hamilton, McCarthy, Jack Bartlett (a one-race substitute for Hamilton aboard “Through”), and Bruce Christopherson (one race with “Irish Mist”).
