Marathon bows out of SIJHL

The SIJHL has accepted “with regrets” the resignation of the Marathon Renegades franchise.
The removal of the team from the rest of the SIJHL schedule stemmed from player concerns over their health and safety if they continued to play with a depleted roster brought about by some earlier defections and recent injuries, Renegades’ president Al Cresswell said.
“It was not predicated by any financial concerns,” he stressed.
SIJHL president Ron Whitehead said the league was able to realign its schedule and playoff structure, though details were not announced yesterday.
Whitehead added he will continue to work with Cresswell and other area groups “to ensure the return of a Marathon team to the SIJHL as the fans were very loyal and very deserving of high-level Junior ‘A’ hockey.”
The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres are in Thunder Bay this weekend for a pair of games against the Fort William North Stars.
The team is coming off a 7-6 loss to the Dryden Ice Dogs in their last game prior to the all-star break.
