Brock Madill, showing the effects of an eight-pound muscle gain between competitions, took top spot overall Saturday at the first-annual Super Body World Natural BodyBuilding Championships in Orlando, Fla.
Madill, a Fort Frances resident who works out at the Sportsplex here, placed first out of 18 competitors in the heavyweight division of the Novice competition.
He then was called back to compete against the first-place winner of the lightweight division (a Hungarian native) for the overall Novice title.
He won that one, too.
While there were fewer competitors in Orlando than at his previous competition, Madill, 29, stressed they were of much better quality.
Madill earned an invitation to Orlando after placing fourth at the World Natural Musclemania BodyBuilding championships in Redondo Beach, Cal. back in November.
Since then, he made a drastic turnaround with his physique–gaining a “phenomenal” eight pounds–to his now 184-pound frame. And with the added muscle, Madill was confident he would place well on the weekend.
“I’ve been training really hard all winter,” he said. “I have good genetics for shape but I have some new training techniques and supplementations.”
Part of that new training has Madill hitting the gym three-four times a week for an intense 75-minute workout. He also worked out with heavier weights and credited his new training partner, local chiropractor Dr. Jeremy McGuire, with helping him.
But Madill admitted the real work has been in his diet, which began in full force in March. That 12-week period, combined with an aerobics program, had him in his best-ever physique and that attracted a judge in Orlando to invite him to the Canadian Natural competition in Toronto on June 19.
Normally, a down time for him in terms in dieting and workouts after a strenuous competition, Madill said he will be back in the gym working out by week’s end and expects to lose the 20-odd pounds he’s already gained back through eating regular food since winning in Orlando.
“I was ready to say ‘I’m not going back into the gym for a while,’” he laughed. “But now I’m going to be back in there by Friday. Right now, though, I feel like a pregnant woman.
“I’m all bloated and my feet are killing me.”
Once he gets back into competitive form, Madill said his goal is to place well in Toronto and then aim at a shot as a member of the Canadian Natural team member.
But due to the financial burden of the Toronto trip, Madill said he would be interested in accepting any donations, pledges, or sponsorships that would help him cover the costs of hotel and travel when he is there.
He can be contacted at home at 274-1374.
In October, Madill will be the guest poser at the 1999 Thunder Bay BodyBuilding Championships.
