Locals win medals at Tae Kwon Do meet

Instructor Ken Anderson and eight students of Northwest Tae Kwon Do attended Grand master Kang’s Can-Am Games tournament on Saturday in Winnipeg.
Held at the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre gymnasium, this large tournament featuring six rings going at once for the full contact fighting division.
Students could compete in forms and fighting competition.
Josh DeGagne of Fort Frances captured the silver medal in forms competition while Hailey Fehr of Stratton won a bronze.
Other locals competing in forms were Corey Fehr of Stratton, Thomas Edwards and Ian Lougheed of Emo, and Joey Theriault of Fort Frances.
In full contact fighting, Bill Daley, a yellow belt from Fort Frances, brought home a silver medal. Winning bronze were Corey Fehr (blue belt red stripe), Edwards (yellow belt), and Lougheed (green belt blue stripe).
Hailey Fehr (green belt), DeGagne (yellow belt), Theriault (blue belt), and Garnet Cornell (a yellow belt from Devlin) also competed in this division.
As their instruction, Anderson was proud of all the fighters, with many of the younger students ending up fighting against larger, older, or more experienced opponents.
They still did very well.
The Northwest Tae Kwon Do club holds classes at Fort Frances High School on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and in the Big Grassy school gym and Our Lady of the Way school gym in Stratton Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
