The provincial ‘AAA’ Bantam hockey championship, which gets underway today at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, will have a local flavour to it.
Goalie Brandon Bodnar, defenceman Carter Brown, and forwards Brody McPherson and Rory Keith are joining players from Dryden, Kenora, and Sioux Lookout on the all-star roster, which is competing with six other teams for provincial glory.
The local squad opened action this morning against the host Thunder Bay Kings, then will take on the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
Then they’ll take to the ice tomorrow afternoon versus the Mississauga Rebels.
The ‘AAA’ Bantam provincial showdown, which wraps up Saturday with the final slated for 3 p.m., has been used of late as a stepping stone for many players who are now in the NHL.
Cody Hodgson, Nazim Kadri, and Steven Stamkos all took part over the past few years.
