This past Sunday, Fort Frances hosted the zone round of the “Four Steps to Stardom” youth bowling tournament.
Twenty local bowlers participated against 80 others from Atikokan, Kenora, and Dryden.
Fort Frances YBC put in five teams of four in each of the Bantam boys, Bantam birls, Junior boys, Junior girls, and Senior boys divisions.
Tyler Good, Donny Brown, Joey Ballan, and Jordan Sokoliak of the senior boys’ team, coached by Rick Stamarski, qualified to the provincial step with a total of 3,478 pins over four games, outscoring the second place team from Dryden by 707 pins!
The junior boys’ team, including Brendan Morand, Dallas Gervais, Raymond Polz, and Taylor Halfe, along with coach, Jason Rousseau, also took gold with a 2,622 total.
Natasha Petawanaqueb, Danielle Bois, Teanna Silander, and Amber Townson of the junior girls, coached by Kathy Bois, earned the bronze medal with 2,400 pins.
In the Bantam divisions, Cole Trimble, Josh Supinski, Shaye McCormick, and Brent Morand, coached by Bob Petawanaqueb, finished in second place with 2,158 as did the girls’ team of Marita Matias, Tatum Hebert, Mya Guenette, and Telia McFarlane, coached by Bobbi-Jo McKenny, with 1,957.
Meanwhile, in Kenora this past December, several local bowlers also competed in the singles competition of the “Four Steps” tournament.
Jonah McFarlane and Jonelle Haas both qualified for the provincial round in the Bantam division while seniors Tylyn Silander and Lyle Dolph both advanced.
All 12 will be bowling in the provincial round next Saturday (Feb. 28) in Sudbury.
