The Mighty Mustang Wrestling Club from International Falls had a pair of locals members do well back on Feb. 10.
Jesse Homer of Fort Frances took first place with three pinfall victories over his opponents while his brother, Jonah, nabbed a third-place finish in their first-ever tournament action in Nashwauk, Mn.
“Both boys are a pleasure to have at practice, extremely athletic, and have picked up wrestling quickly,” lauded assistant coach Jeremy Mann.
The club then competed at a tournament in Grand Rapids, Mn. on Saturday, where it ended up snagging a pair of first-place finishes along with four second-place ones.
Rodger Dueck from the Falls finished first in the boys’ 70- to 75-pound division.
Aiden Juen of Littlefork, Mn., also nabbed top spot in the boys’ 95- to 100-pound division.
Jesse Homer finished second in the 50- to 55-pound division while Jonah Homer earned third in the 55- to 60-pound division.
Damien Juen of Littlefork nabbed second in the 55- to 60-pound division while Teagan Green of the Falls did the same in the 60 -to 65-pound division.
Layla Reller of the Falls, meanwhile, earned second in the girls’ 65- to 70-pound division.
“This weekend, both coach Dan [Schermerhorne] and I were coaching in Grand Rapids,” noted Mann.
“We are seeing improvement as the season continues.
“Double leg takedowns, escaping from [the] bottom, and scrambling were great, but we need to work on being more offensive and countering headlocks,” he said.
Hudson Mann, who was born in Fort Frances but now lives in the Falls, wound up in second place at the “Rumble in the Rum” tournament in Princeton, Mn. over the weekend.
Hudson is in Grade 7 but has been wrestling at the Grade 8 level this year.
Up next, some of the Mighty Mustangs will be in Superior, Wis. this weekend for another tournament.
Hudson Mann, meanwhile, will be competing at the Liberty Nationals in St. Joseph, Missouri.
