Local U18 rinks fall short at qualifier

They tried their best but a berth to the Ontario Winter Games just wasn’t to be for the local Owen Riches and Grace George rinks over the weekend.
Riches came away with a 1-2 record while George went 0-2. They both failed to advance from the qualifying round held at the Fort Frances Curling Club on Friday and Saturday.
With just two teams competing on both the men’s and women’s sides, a best-of-three format was used to determine who would advance.
Riches opened play on Friday evening with an impressive 7-3 win over the Dallas Burgess rink.
The local rink trailed 3-2 after four ends but then went on to outscore Burgess 5-0 over the final four ends to steal the victory.
Despite the comeback, Riches’ good fortune didn’t last as they lost a narrow 5-4 decision on Saturday morning before falling by a 5-2 count that afternoon, which prevented him from moving on.
As for the George rink, they were thumped 10-1 by the Britney Malette rink in the opener on Friday evening.
The local rink scored their lone point of the match in the seventh end.
Despite a much closer encounter on Saturday morning, it was Malette who again prevailed by a 10-7 margin.
Both the Burgess and Malette rinks now advance to the Ontario Winter Games, which is slated for Feb. 26-29 in Orillia.
