Playing against the top teams in Manitoba, the local trio of John Sivonen, Gary Wager, and Evan Woodlands teamed up to place second in their division at the Red River Ex “Hoop it Up” 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Winnipeg last weekend.
After dropping their first game 11-9 to a team from Brandon, the threesome cruised to eight straight wins on the ‘B’-side to reach the final against the same squad they lost to initially.
And Brandon got the best of the Fort trio once again, edging them 12-10 (teams in the final had to win by at least two points).
The local team, made up of players on the Muskie senior boys’ basketball team, also had placed second at a tournament in Duluth just two weeks ago.
After reeling off seven consecutive wins there, the local trio lost both games in the double-elimination final against a team from Chisholm, Mn. by identical 18-17 scores.
All three players are using these types of tournaments to stay in shape as they prepare for the Northwestern Ontario regional team tryouts later this month.
Joining them at the regional tryouts will be Muskie junior girls’ player Sarah Noonan.
