Local squashers snare inaugural Northern Cup

The first instalment of the Northern Cup Squash Challenge is now in the books between Sioux Lookout and the local Sunset Country Squash Club.
The challenge features ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ and ‘D’ players facing off for five total games each, with total points being the winning decision–much like golf’s Ryder Cup scoring.
Players representing the Fort Frances contingent included Chad and Mark Faragher (‘A’), Josh Councillor, Jeff Wright, and Mike Canfield (‘B’), Bob Tkachuk and Al Christiansen (‘C’), and junior club members Owen Riches and Ryley Booth (‘D’).
In an exhibition match, Evan Wright of here and Sioux Lookout’s Alex Agustine squared off, with Agustine winning 3-2.
Then in the hotly-contested point scoring, Fort won 780-752 to capture the Cup for the first round.
The local club’s two juniors garnered maximum points to score the win.
The challenge will be held each October, with Sioux Lookout visiting Fort Frances next year to reciprocate.
Up next for the local club is the Balmoral tournament set for Nov. 16-18 in Thunder Bay, which features men’s, ladies’, and junior’s divisions.
