Although not everyone who went to Thunder Bay last weekend for the annual Northwestern Open walked off the squash court a winner, they all had a good time.
“We had a lot of fun,” enthused Bob Tkachuk.
On the court, Ben Andrusco of Fort Frances was crowned champion in the men’s ‘B’ division after beating Dr. Scott Gledhill of Terrace Bay 3-1 in the best-of-five final.
“That was the best match of the tournament,” noted Tkachuk. “Ben also won the Courtsports Open in Winnipeg in the ‘C’ [division] a few weeks ago–he’s really on a roll.”
Andrusco reached the ‘B’ final by downing Dave Zabloksi (Kenora) 3-1, Dave Chow (Thunder Bay) 3-2, and Dave Plychuk (Thunder Bay) 3-0.
In the men’s ‘E’ division, Richard Allan took top honours after beating fellow Fort squasher Greg St. Croix 3-1 in the best-of-five final.
Allan opened with a 3-2 win over Adam Solomon (Thunder Bay), then beat St. Croix 3-1, his brother, Drew, 3-0, and Bruce Penner (Thunder Bay) 3-1.
Drew Allan finished up with a 2-2 record.
And Josh Johnston captured the junior consolation crown. After losing his first match to Katie Arpin (Thunder Bay) 3-0, he rebounded to blank both C. Kosonan and then G. Steadman (Thunder Bay) by 3-0 scores.
Bob Tkachuk won his first two matches in the men’s ‘A’ division but then fell in the semi-finals to eventual champ Bob Shine, who won the final 3-1 over Darrell Cole.
Also competing in various divisions from Fort Frances were Anthony Andrusco, Jason Kabel, Toby Munro, Ken Allan, Steve Krag, Mary Beth Tkachuk, Megan Canfield, and Sarah Noonan.
