Piper Miller scored twice to pace the Fort Frances Attack Scorpions to a narrow 2-1 win over the Dryden She-Devils on Sunday morning at the Ice For Kids Arena in the bronze-medal game of the PeeWee division at the Fort Frances Girls’/Women’s Hockey Association’s PeeWee and Bantam tournaments.
After a scoreless first period, Miller opened the scoring with 4:14 to go in the second when she snapped a low shot home.
Then with time winding down in the frame, Miller stripped the She-Devil’s defence of the puck after a face-off in the Attack Scorpions’ end before skating past everyone up the ice and firing a slapshot to double the lead with 36 seconds to go.
Caleigh Calder did get one back for Dryden when she cut into the middle of the slot before rifling one home with 1:50 to go in the third, but that’s as close as the She-Devils would get.
The Attack Scorpions opened tourney play Friday morning with a 6-1 win over the Emo Express.
Miller scored twice and added an assist in that one while Julia Guertin also tallied twice.
Hayden Allam and Kassidy Gurniak added singles while Karsyn McQuaker notched Emo’s lone goal in the third period.
Fort Frances then lost 4-3 to the Lake of the Woods Venom that afternoon before rebounding with a 3-0 shutout of the Rockets White on Saturday morning.
The Attack Scorpions then wrapped up round-robin play by edging the St. Vital Chill 2-1 that afternoon to head into Sunday’s bronze-medal game with a 3-1 record.
As for the Express, after Friday morning’s loss to the Attack Scorpions, they fell 4-1 to the Chill that afternoon.
Emo rebounded with a 3-3 tie against the She-Devils on Saturday morning before ending tourney play with a 7-0 loss to the K-Town Inferno.
The Inferno claimed the gold medal in the PeeWee division with a 6-3 win over the Venom on Sunday afternoon.
In the Bantam division, Shai VanWalleghem netted a hat trick to pace the K-Town Mayhem to a 6-2 victory over the Fort Frances Devils in Sunday morning’s bronze-medal game.
Chalise Kenny opened the scoring for the Mayhem 1:20 into the first when she fired home a centering pass from Patience Morrison.
Piper Cross drew the Devils even with 11:15 to go in the frame when she fired a shot from the corner that beat the Mayhem goalie.
VanWalleghem then notched her first of the game with 8:30 to go in the second to put the Mayhem ahead 2-1.
After a Fort Frances defender “blew a tire” early in the third, VanWalleghem capitalized again when she fired home a cross-ice feed.
Anna Johnson, Atonie-Marie Skead, and VanWalleghem then all tallied within a three-minute span to stake the Mayhem to a commanding 6-1 lead.
Shay Mannausau did get one back for the Devils with 1:31 left to go but that’s as close as they would get.
The Devils had opened tourney play Friday morning with a 2-1 win over the Fort Frances Goonies.
Cross and Elizabeth Cousineau lit the lamp for the Devils while Raelle Redford netted the Goonies’ lone goal.
The Devils then battled to a 3-3 tie with the Mayhem that afternoon, with Mannausau scoring twice in that one.
The squad then lost 2-1 to the K-Town Flyers on Saturday morning before capping round-robin play with a scoreless tie against the Dryden Warriors.
As for the Goonies, after the loss to the Devils on Friday morning, they were nipped 3-2 by the Warriors that afternoon.
The Goonies then were dumped 6-2 by the Mayhem on Saturday afternoon before ending tourney play with a 2-1 loss to the Flyers.
Next up, the Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association will host its annual Novice ‘A’ tournament this weekend (Feb. 15-17).
