Local senior rinks split opening draws

The Judy LaBelle rink won its opening game at the Region 1&2 men’s and women’s senior playdowns last night at the Fort Frances Curling Club but Ken McKinnon couldn’t do the same.
LaBelle dumped Marion Clark (Port Arthur) 9-1 to join Cristiene Hall-Teravainen (Port Arthur) and Barbara Ward (Port Arthur) at 1-0 heading into action today.
Joy Lappalainen (Fort William) and Peggy Taylor (Kenora) were at 0-1 with Clark.
LaBelle was back on the ice at 11 a.m. today against Hall-Teravainen (the score was not known by press time), then was to meet Taylor at 7:30 p.m.
The Fort Frances rink, which also includes Nancy Evans, Mary-Beth Tkachuk, and Trudy Badiuk, will wrap up the round-robin tomorrow versus Ward (11 a.m.) and then Lappalainen (4 p.m.)
On the men’s side, McKinnon fell 10-2 to Ken Anderson (Red Lake) last night to join Randy Fossum (Port Arthur) and Bruce Melville (Port Arthur) at 0-1 heading into play today.
Former Canadian and world champ Al Hackner (Fort William) and Larry Chepsiuk (Fort William) joined Anderson atop the standings at 1-0.
After facing Fossum at 11 a.m. this morning (the score wasn’t known by press time), McKinnon is set to meet Chepsiuk at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
McKinnon’s rink, which includes Jim Jackson, Ron Martinuk, and Sandy Haney, then will wrap up the round-robin tomorrow against Hackner (11 a.m.) and Melville (4 p.m.)
Admission is free, and spectators are welcome to catch all the action.
The top men’s and women’s rinks will advance to the provincials Feb. 25-28 in Blind River.
The national showdown is slated for March 20-27 in Ottawa, with the worlds to take place April 16-24 in Chelyabinsk, Russia.
