Local runners hit stride in ‘Gizzard’

The weather didn’t quite live up to the event name.
But several district runners at least felt a slight chill in their bones as they braved the elements Saturday to compete in the 35th-annual “Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard Run” in conjunction with “Icebox Days” festivities in International Falls.
Lorne Ricard of Fort Frances led the local contingent by coming in 14th out of 94 runners in the 10-km event (44:26).
Billy Michl of here was 27th (50:38) while Emo’s Kelly Agar was right behind in 28th (50:44).
Other district participants included Lorena Jenks (43rd, 54:50), Cheryl Tibbs (66th, 62:12), and Natasha Shack (80th, 65:23), all of Fort Frances, Devlin’s Marty Emond (67th, 62:13), and Emo’s April Cormack (74th, 63:08) and Sandra Drennan (75th, 63:09).
In the five-km race, Brendan Hyatt of Fort Frances was the top local finisher, taking 11th place in the field of 172 runners (24:21).
Other Fort runners to crack the top 20 included Hailey Beaudry (17th, 25:07) and Michl (18th, 25:21), who pulled double duty by running both races.
Emo’s Jenny Hammond (26:22) and Conrad Dueck (26:52) finished 30th and 31st, respectively, while Devlin’s Missy Nelson was 39th (27:56).
Grant Goddard of Emo placed 49th (29:04).
Kerry Zub (29:49) and Ted Brockie (30.00) of Fort Frances were 58th and 59th, respectively.
An Emo trio followed in Ginger Bragg (62nd, 30:33), Joseph Brubacher (65th, 30:50), and Wes Friesen (66th, 30:57).
Karen Mitchell of Fort Frances was 79th (32:40), with the Emo duo of Andrea Debungie (80th, 33:15) and Wanetta Petkau (81st, 33:20) not far behind.
Ian Strain of here placed 101st (35:39) while Emo’s Katrina Petkau was 119th (38:13).
The Devlin duo of Neila Booth (39:39) and Tammy Kennett (39:41) were 126th and 127th, respectively.
Other district runners included Becky Chabot (162nd, 55:16), Linda Gill (164th, 55:20), Doug Cridland (165th, 56:14), Megan Soderholm (171st, 58:23) and Janet Soderholm (172nd, 58:24), all of Fort Frances.
Rounding out the local contingent were Robin McCormick (163rd, 55:17) and Marie Saunders (167th, 56:45) of Devlin, and Emo’s Laura Cridland (166th, 56:15).
