A pair of local rinks will be looking to capture the Northern Ontario Masters curling crown this weekend in Kakabeka Falls.
Ken McKinnon (Fort Frances Curling Club) and Bryan Bonot (Stratton Curling Club) will battle it out with five other rinks in the men’s division for a berth in the 2011 Canadian Masters, which runs March 30-April 5 in Winnipeg.
McKinnon, whose rink includes third Jim Jackson, second Glen Jackson, and lead Stan Cottam, opened action this afternoon against Don Spakowski (Fort William Curling Club).
He then will face Bob Coulter (Elliot Lake) tonight.
The Bonot rink, consisting of third Terry Lee, second Jack Gustafson, and lead Ted Stewart, had a bye for this afternoon’s draw before kicking off their round-robin schedule tonight versus Ron Kowalchuk (Port Arthur Curling Club).
The round-robin portion of the tourney, which is for curlers aged 60 and over, will run until Sunday morning, with the finals taking place that afternoon.
In women’s action, just two Port Arthur rinks are vying for the crown.
