Raymond Roy didn’t let an early hole bury him in the opener of the Dominion men’s curling club provincials in Thunder Bay last night.
Roy and his rink of third Dave Broman, second Butch Wensley, and lead Patrick Briere upended Mike Rubineck of the host Port Arthur Curling Club 6-4.
Roy fell behind 2-0 after allowing singles to Rubineck in the first and second ends, but responded in a big way with three in the third.
Rubineck regained the lead with a deuce in the fourth, but Roy knotted things with a single in the fifth, forged ahead with a steal of one in the sixth, then wrapped up with another single steal in the eighth.
Both of Roy’s games today are against other rinks that also opened 1-0 yesterday.
Roy faced Al Viel (Blind River) this afternoon, then will take on Denis Prevost (Coniston Curling Club) in the nightcap.
Kim Beaudry, meanwhile, was able to triple her fun on the women’s side last night.
Beaudry and her rink of third Kelly Wagar, second Teresa McFayden, and lead Jeannie Sheppard opened with a 9-0 shutout of Sharon Giertuga (Fort William).
The locals scored three points in each of the first two ends to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
Beaudry then stole singles in the third, fourth, and fifth ends before the teams shook hands.
The competition will heat up today as Beaudry faced match-ups with the other two rinks that also opened at 1-0.
They tackled Judith MacMichael (Soo Curlers Association) this afternoon, then will meet Melanie Patry (Coniston Curling Club) in the evening draw.
The provincial champs will advance to the Canadian championships slated Nov. 23-28 in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
