Local Grand Knight Dino Morelli is pleased to have his Council #2766 support the local Special Olympics participants.
Two local Olympians—Gerald Carrier and Ray Bedard—will be travelling to Guelph, Ont. for the provincial games May 26-29.
They will be competing in five-pin bowling.
In order to raise awareness of, and funds for, Special Olympics, the idea of a “Flag Relay” was born.
It is a way to involve the local members of the Knights of Columbus with their communities by participating in the relay in various cities and towns throughout the province.
The goal is to make the Knights’ “Flag Relay for Special Olympics” one of the movement’s major grass-roots fundraisers and public awareness vehicles.
Community co-ordinator Gaby Hanzuk stressed there are more than 20 Fort Frances Special Olympic athletes training in their favourite sports program.
Their goal is to attend the various competitions throughout the year in order to qualify.
They begin with regionals, then on to provincials, nationals, and finally the worlds in most sports.
Special Olympics is funded strictly by the generous donations from our community.
It does not receive any government funding.
The flag arrived in Fort Frances yesterday and will leave to Kenora on May 15.
It will be displayed at Safeway during this week for local people to sign in conjunction with a tag day on Thursday.
There also will be a tag day at Tim Hortons on Thursday.
Tags will be given out at various other locations throughout the week.
The Knights of Columbus #2766 also offers an “adopt-an-athlete” program.
For a minimum donation of $100, an organization or individual can adopt one of the Special Olympians from our community.
This money helps the Special Olympians to cover their costs for attending the provincial games.
You also can “Adopt-A-Knight Sponsor.” For a minimum donation, anyone can adopt one flag bearer for the relay.
All money goes directly to the athletes.
For more information, or to sponsor or donate to the Special Olympics athletes, call Morelli at 274-7851.
You can drop your donation off at the office of St. Mary’s church on Monday to Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
