Local curlers struggle at Soo

Despite gritty efforts, neither the Fort Frances Curling Club’s junior men’s or women’s rinks qualified for their respective finals of the provincial showdown over the weekend in Sault Ste. Marie.
Jenna Enge’s rink beat Vanessa Maloney (Sudbury) 7-4 on Friday afternoon in the 3 vs. 4 game under the Page playoff format.
But Enge was eliminated from further contention following a 10-1 loss to Ashley Miharija (Fort William) in just five ends Saturday morning.
Miharija had lost 7-6 to eventual champion Tracy Horgan (Sudbury) in the 1 vs. 2 game of the Page playoff format on Friday to set up Saturday morning’s showdown with Enge.
Meanwhile, Adam Bolen’s rink finished with a 1-4 record to wind up in fifth place overall in the six-rink field. Only the top two advanced to the junior men’s final.
After starting out winless in their first three games, Bolen earned a hard-fought 7-6 victory over Curtis D’Amour (New Liskeard) on Friday afternoon.
He then lost 7-2 to Ryan Lilly (Sudbury) on Saturday morning in his team’s final match of the round-robin.
Ryan Harnden (Sault Ste. Marie) downed Eric Theriault (Fort William) 7-3 in the junior men’s final.
Both Horgan and Harnden now will represent Northern Ontario at the national showdown Feb. 3-11 in St. Catharines, Ont.
