Local cadet off to biathlon championships

A 15-year-old Stratton youth will be one of 12 biathletes representing Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario at the National Cadet Biathlon Competition on Feb. 29-March 4 at CFB Valcartier, Que.
Austin Zin, a member of the #144 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps (Fort Frances), was selected as a member of the male composite team after an impressive performance at the Manitoba-Northwestern Ontario provincial championships Feb. 1 at Falcon Lake, Man.
The Fort High student has been in Sea Cadets for four years and took up biathlon three years ago. In addition to biathlon, Zin also is active in Tae Kwon Do, soccer, and cross-country running.
His mother, Cathy Wilcott, said he is considering applying to the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ont. when he graduates high school.
The national championship is sponsored by the Canadian Armed Forces, but it is open to cadets and non-cadets alike. Each competitor will ski and shoot over a six-km course.
Last year, the Manitoba-Northwestern Ontario team brought home gold medals in the individual male and female sprints, as well as a silver in the male unit team event and a bronze in the male unit team relay race.
