Local bowlers strike medals at provincials

Rick and Carolyn Stamarski each brought home medals from this year’s provincial five-pin bowling championships in Sturgeon Falls over the Easter weekend.
Rick Stamarski was a member of the Sunset Country men’s team, which earned the silver medal after finishing the 15-game roll-offs with 70 points–just two behind front-running Cambrian North (North Bay).
Cambrian North now advances to the national showdown next month in Regina.
Finishing in third in the men’s division was Nickel District with 69 points, followed by Gateway (54.5), North of Superior (54.5), and Gold Belt (40).
Meanwhile, Carolyn Stamarski captured the bronze medal in the women’s singles division, finishing with a 244.7 average in 10 games.
Her 2,447 total pinfall was just 40 pins behind Cindy Lalonde (Nickel District. Cathy Davidson (Cambrian North) topped the women’s singles division with a 262.9 average.
Stamarski also was a member of the Sunset Country women’s team, along with local resident Amy Gushulak, which placed fifth out of the six teams with 50 points.
Stamarski was second on the team with a 231.28 average, with Gushulak third at 219.36.
The top women’s team was Cambrian North with 89.5 points, comfortably ahead of second-place Nickel District (72) and third-place Gateway (54.5).
Rounding out the women’s field were North of Superior (50) and Gold Belt (44).
Stamarski also placed third in the ladies’ singles stepladder division, losing out to Lalonde by a 254-242 count in the third match. She earlier had defeated Patty Felteau (North of Superior) 251-221.
In mixed action, the Sunset Country team, which included Carla Hanzuk of here, placed fifth with 56 points.
North of Superior took the gold with 71 points, followed by Nickel District (63), Cambrian North (61.5), and Gateway (57.5). Gold Belt was last with 20 points.
Sunset Country finished second in the aggregate standings with 42 points, seven behind first-place Cambrian North. Nickel Belt was third with 35 points, followed by North of Superior (30), Gateway (19), and Gold Belt (16).
Next year’s provincials will be held in Thunder Bay, with the zone roll-offs to be held here at Plaza Lanes.
