A Fort Frances bowler has punched her ticket to the P.O.A. (pins over average) provincial championships to be held in late February in Timmins.
Competing in the zone round held Nov. 16-17 in Dryden, Danielle Bois finished the five-game roll-off with a +106 total above her 160 entry average.
Bois opened with a 244, then rolled games of 179, 183, and 147 before finishing with a 153 to wind up in second place among the 15 women who tried out.
As such, she will make up Sunset Country Team #1 that will compete at the provincials in Timmins along with Shannon Davis of Kenora, Robert Keeper of Dryden, and Jesse Sidor of Balmertown.
Davis topped the ladies’ division at +121 above her 162 entry average while Keeper (+207 above his 205 average) and Sidor (+170 above his 185 average) finished one-two in the men’s division.
Sunset Country Team #2, meanwhile, will be comprised of Scooter Bowman of Balmertown, Mike Pavey of Kenora, Kayla Gadd of Dryden, and former Fort Frances bowler June McNally, who currently bowls out of Balmertown.
Bowman was fourth among the men at +146 above his 147 average while Pavey was fifth at +138 above his 173 average.
Pavey advanced after Kyle Hamilton of Balmertown, who had finished third among the men at +152 above his 207 average, opted to drop out.
Gadd was third in the ladies’ division (+99 above her 142 average) while McNally came fourth (+93 above her 129 average).
Jenn Rollins of Dryden missed qualifying for a provincial berth by just one pin–finishing in fifth place behind McNally at +92 above her 163 average.
Len Noonan was the top local bowler among the 13 entries in the men’s division after finishing in seventh place at +99 above his 177 entry average.
Mike Behan wound up three pins back in eighth spot at +96 above his 184 average, followed by Mike Gervais in 10th (+12 above his 134 average) and Rich Walton in 11th (+1 above his 175 average).
Other Fort Frances Bowling Club members who tried out in the ladies’ division included Kathy Bois in 10th place (who finished exactly at her 170 average), Nancy Noonan in 11th place (minus-seven below her 153 average), and Marla Fedeniuk in 12th (minus-17 below her 195 average).
In other news, local bowlers now are in the midst of the house round of the annual Hi-Lo Doubles tournament–a four-week showdown that also features a pins-over-average format.
The top two duos from both the Tuesday night and Thursday night leagues then will advance to the zone round set for Jan. 10-12 in Balmertown, where the top two teams from there will represent Sunset Country at the provincials in Timmins in February.
The zone round of the Executive portion of the tournament also will be held Jan. 10-12 in Balmertown, with the top bowler in the Presidents, Secretaries, and Treasurers divisions each advancing as Sunset Country’s reps at the provincial level.
