Local birders fly low in Winnipeg

Five junior players from the Fort Frances Badminton Club competed at the Winnipeg Winter Club Invitational over the weekend.
Tyson Storkson, Derek Thompson, and Adrian Bondett all competed in the boys’ singles ‘C’ division but were quickly relegated to the consolation side.
Bondett went the furthest of the three, losing the best-of-three final 2-0 to J. Clara (Thunder Bay) to finish with a 2-2 record.
Storkson went 1-2 while Thompson was winless in his two matches.
In the girls’ singles ‘B’ division, Simone Desjardins went 1-2 before being eliminated while her sister, Natalie, went 1-1.
Meanwhile, head coach Manami Alexander competed in the ladies’ ‘A’ singles division and ended up with a 1-2 record to finish out of the consolation final.
But Alexander did capture the women’s doubles ‘A’ crown with Jennifer Linley (Winnipeg) and the mixed ‘B’ title with G. Ellis (Winnipeg).
In other doubles’ play, Thompson teamed up with Thunder Bay’s Clarance Golfing in the men’s doubles ‘B/C’ event but failed to win a game at 0-2.
The duo of Bondett and Storkson went 1-2 in that same division.
The Desjardins sisters were sent to the ‘C’ flight of the women’s doubles ‘B/C’ event with a 1-2 record.
Simone Desjardins and Storkson also teamed up to reach the mixed doubles ‘B/C’ consolation final, but were beaten by a Winnipeg duo in their closest match that went the full three games.
Despite the low finishes, Alexander said her older players will use the weekend to build on upcoming competitions, including the Muskie season which gets underway shortly.
“There were great matches and the students learned a lot from this tournament, especially the ones getting ready for their high school season,” said Alexander.
When the high school season gets underway, Bondett and Storkson will compete in boys’ doubles while Simone Desjardins and Thompson, a pair of ninth graders, will compete in singles events.
The first Muskie senior practice goes tomorrow at 5 p.m. at the high school gym. Newcomers are welcome to try out.
Meanwhile, the badminton club is gearing up for its annual adult/junior tournament March 23-24, also at the Fort High gym. Entry fee is $27 for juniors and $30 for seniors.
