A team comprised of players from both local junior baseball teams enjoyed a successful tournament hosted by the Fort William Nationals in Thunder Bay over the weekend.
Fort Frances lost their first game on Friday to the host Nationals by a score of 9-6, even though they had the lead heading into the late innings.
Matt DePiero led the way by going 3-for-3 at the plate while Mike Sande, Matt Hebert, and Colin Barton all pitched.
Fort Frances then rebounded with an 8-2 win over the Fort William Americans-Thunder Bay Marine team on Saturday afternoon.
Blake Wepruk had a strong performance on the mound, going the distance for the win.
Barton and Hebert then provided the pitching in Fort Frances’ win over the Port Arthur Nationals-Red Team later that day. Solid defence, timely hitting, and aggressive base-running helped provide the win.
Fort Frances did not advance to the playoff round based on their runs against, but the coaches were extremely pleased with the team’s ability to compte with the much longer established leagues in Thunder Bay.
They look forward to more competition with them in the future.
The Fort Frances team also included Logan Allen, Brady Caul, George Halvorsen, Chris Mutz, Matt Mutz, and Nolan Windigo.
Both Fort Frances teams, along with the Barwick-Emo team, resume regular league action tomorrow (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at the St. Francis Sportsfields.
