Local Atom ‘AA’ team strikes gold

Craig Brockie, a Fort Frances native who now lives in British Columbia, still believes in the young hockey talent we have here in Fort Frances.
Brockie and his business—Brockie.org—are the proud sponsors of the local Atom ‘AA’ hockey team which captured the gold medal at a tournament in Baudette, Mn. over the weekend.
The Brockie.org 99ers opened round-robin play on fire Friday night when they blanked Kenora 6-0, even though they spent a good portion of the game shorthanded.
On Saturday morning, Warroad managed to score with less than a second left on the clock to earn a 4-4 tie with the 99ers.
But the local squad came back strong that night, doubling host Baudette 6-3.
The 99ers ended round-robin play in first place with a 2-0-1 record and so advanced to the championship game Sunday, where they were given another crack at Warroad.
The 99ers came on strong in the first period and built up a 2-0. Warroad drew within one in the second but the 99ers regained their two-goal lead later in the period.
Knowing the gold medal was just one period away, the 99ers stayed strong in the third, scoring again to make it a 4-1 game.
Warroad got that one back, but the 99ers added one last goal to ice the 5-2 victory and the gold!
The 99ers now head to Bemidji, Mn. this weekend, where hopefully the boys can continue to show their great teamwork and once again come out victorious.
