Tonight’s annual general meeting of the Borderland Soccer League might be the most important in its history as the 2011 season hinges on how many people show up to sit on the board of directors.
“If no one shows up to fill the positions, and our constitution states that we need to have a minimum of three positions filled for the league to function, our league will be suspended for this summer,” current president Tristan Hutton warned.
The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. in the ’52 Canadians Arena boardroom.
Hutton said almost the entire board will need to be filled for the upcoming season, with the president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, registrar, and director of games and officials positions all vacant.
“What’s happening is a lot of the people that have been involved with the board for the last 10 years are wanting to move onto other things,” he explained.
“A lot of us are getting old and can’t play the game anymore, plus some of the members have families, as well, and trying to do things for your kids on top of managing the league gets very time-consuming.”
Hutton also feels having some new faces on the board will do a lot of good for the league going forward.
“It’ll be good to get some new blood and some new motivated individuals to help get some new ideas going,” he reasoned.
“But it’ll be important for that younger generation to step up to the plate in order for the league to continue functioning,” he stressed.
After taking any general questions or concerns to start off the meeting, voting for the vacant positions will be held soon after.
Any member who took part in the eight-team league last season, and has paid their fees, is eligible to vote.
If a member is unable to attend, they can have someone cast their vote for them by proxy.
As well, any members who are age 15 or younger will have to have their ballot cast by a parent.
