Norm Lindsay and his 17-year-old partner, Jess Swenson, reeled in top spot in the third-annual “Bassin’ for Bucks” fishing tournament in Sioux Narrows on Sunday.
Their three-day haul totalled 47.58 pounds–good enough to take the $4,000 first prize in the 101-team tournament by a mere .90 pounds.
Lindsay/Swenson weighed in 16.48 pounds Sunday–including a 4.56-pounder–to eke out a come-from-behind win over runners-up William Melvin and Jim Kline, whose three-day total tipped the scale at 46.68 pounds.
The champs opened the tourney Friday with a 16.18-pound catch, then netted 14.92 pounds on Saturday.
Finishing third was Phil Killeen/Alex Kezler with a 46.58-pound total, followed by Joe Freedy/Wayne Wagner (who had led the field after two days with 32.28 pounds but faltered on the final day with just a 14.24-pound catch).
Rounding out the top 10 were Michael/Aaron Causyn (44.50 pounds), Dale LaBelle/Karl Howells (43.02), Joe Pritchett/Hiram Archibald (42.60), Mike and Steve Salvador (42.08), Tom Copenace/Vincent Kelly (41.48), and Ken and Fran Welch (41.38).
The Causyns and the team of Rick Savage/Fred Curwain tied for the largest bass caught during the tournament at 5.54 pounds. The latter team caught their big fish on Friday while the Causyns hauled theirs in on Sunday.
The big fish caught Saturday went to the team of Brad Doerkson/Scott Curtis with a 5.10-pounder.
Some of the top local teams included Doug McBride/Steve Ballan (12th with 41.18 pounds), Brad Carlson/Bruce Ness (26th with 32.34), and Scott Gobeil/Don Robertson (34th with 29.98).
